PERIODONTAL DISEASE AND TREATMENT

Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease. It causes the gums to become red, swollen, and bleed easily. There is usually little to no discomfort. Gingivitis is often caused by inadequate oral hygiene. Gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment and good oral home care.

Untreated Gingivitis can advance to Periodontitis. With time, plaque can spread and grow below the gum line. Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums and stimulate a chronic inflammatory response in which the tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed. Gums separate from the teeth forming deeper pockets (spaces between the teeth and gums). As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. Eventually the teeth can become loose and may have to be removed.

In addition to diabetes, periodontal disease has been linked to other chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease and even cancer.

We perform many types of treatment for both healthy and affected mouths. These include both non-surgical and surgical treatments. We are specialists in cosmetic, gum grafting, bone regeneration, pocket reduction and implant procedures.

We use an automated probing system – the Florida Probe for comprehensive examinations, as well as digital radiographs which significantly reduce radiation exposure, and an intra-oral camera for patient education.

We work with our patients and customize treatments that best suit their needs. A referral is not necessary, just a desire to improve and maintain your dental and overall health. However we take a highly collaborative team approach with referring dentists. So, if we can be of service to you, please do not hesitate to contact us.
